Unusual Wheelock Carbine Coachman’s size circa early to Mid-18th century. Enclosed wheelock mechanism showing large “I R” initials engraved at the breech end of the barrel and the number 12 on the tang. Thecarbine is well made with a heavy octagon barrel measuring 18” that is nicely flared at the muzzle with fancy pierced 2 leaf rear sight. Approximately .60 caliber with 7 groove deep rifling. The stock has a darkoriginal stain with plain bone inlays except small oval in cheek piece shows the ruminants of a crest. The ramrod tip matches the bone fore end and inlays. The hammer is nicely engraved with some pierced work decorations. It is our opinion this wheelock was made for a castle or town guard unit. The condition is “As Found” with light coating of rust but at least good to very good overall. The interior of the lock is complete with chainand spring showing engraving and high quality also. (Antique) Est.: $2000-$4000
