Pair of 17th century wheelock pistols showing 3 armoury marks on the breech end of the barrel possibly “Augsburg”. Ornately bone inlaid with fancy etched and gilted locks probably decorated by Spitzer in the 19th century. Measures 25” overall with 15 ¼” octagon barrels of approximately .52 caliber smoothbore. The inlay is of high quality with figures of hunter, dogs, mystic beasts, geometrics and line and dot borders that are all well done and elaborate. The tangs have armoural crests with knight’s helm and eagle facing left above it atop a shield motif. The inlays are 98%-99% intact with diminimus damage or loss. Two matching ramrods are included. The mechanisms are intact and the pair are in overall very good plus to almost fine condition. Spitzer ran a firm in Germany during the 19th century that re-created and restored fine arms and armour to adorn the castles and halls of the great home in Europe. His work varied in quality and price with his top-quality inlay like this pair being very expensive at the time and rivaling the masters of the wheelock era 20 years earlier.
