Carved Powder Horn Inscribed “Samuel Hawood’s Horn Crown Point Novem’r Ye, Is 7th 1759”. Shows British National crest, map from New York at bottom to Lake Catepokey at the top. The horn documents many towns Sknactey, Johnsons, G flat Saratoga, Ft. Hunter, also places like high lake, Scatroon Lake, Block house with depictions of forts, churches, landmarks, animals, mystic beasts, and other naieve folk art motifs. There is an “M” carved at the top center of the ring around the base of the neck which is possibly a signature. Measures 10 5/8” across the curve from tip to base and 2 ¾” across the center of the plug to outside dimensions of the horn. The plug is original and the base of the horn shows two holes for a carry cord. A period carved plug is in the spout which shows contemporary age. The horn is in very good condition with a mellow patina showing minor wear from carry and use. A small chip is missing at the bottom edge and worn where lost indicating from contemporary use. The wood plug in base is correct and nails show rust and proper aging. The overall condition is very good plus to almost fine for its age. This horn was picked for a major Southern California collector by Walter O’ Conner who suggested he purchase it from an Eastern auction 20-30 years ago by our memory. Est.: $8,000-$16,000
