Confederate autograph letter signed from Sergeant Joseph E. Wallis of the 20th Texas Infantry, Company B. Accompanied by cover. Datelined Eagle Grove, Texas, 18 March 1863 letter to his wife Kate reads in part: ''…I Rec. a Letter from Father yesterday…he also says that Mr. Toland has a bad time of the measles white & black, that Mr. T had lost one…man by the measles -- He also writes me that he is getting along very well farming, only that the beans are growing very fast - & that all of our Negroes were well & 'hotter' than he ever saw them -- we are all well…when writing the date above, it brought to My Reflection what I was doing this time one year ago, it Reminded me that one year ago I Enlisted as a soldier, did not think that I would be lying around camp one year from that time, but such is the fact & we all must take it the best we can -- we are all getting along peaceful & quiet now in camp -- we have almost given out the idea of going to Houston now as there is no order ever been sent yet…2:PM since writing the above I learn that our Regt will go down in town to take the place of Griffin's battallion -- I Expect we will go to-morrow or next day, If this is so we will try the City Life again & if we do go there is not much possibility of us being ordered off. I hear no other news to Day / While I Remain yr. affec. Husband / J.E. Wallis.” Single page letter composed in both pencil and ink measures 12.5'' x 8.75''. Some light toning and wear, else excellent condition.
