Two Papua New Guinea ceremonial tribal masks decorated with curie shells, pig tusks and grasses. Also with a Papua New Guinea highland ceremonial axe. (3 items)These items were acquired from tribesmen by a geologist working for a mining company in the Kainantu and Goroka area in the Eastern Highlands of Papua in the early 1960s. At the time some of the tribes there were still cannibalistic. The Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea are home to one of the most ethnically diverse populations on the planet. For years, the rugged terrain and dense jungle has kept tribal peoples locked away from the rest of the world. New tribal groups are still being discovered to this day.
