204: An Early Chavin Redware Lobster Vessel
From ancient peru, Chavin Maranon (Peru Jungle bordering Ecuador), ca. 1500-1200 BC. Ceramic vessel depicting a lobster or crayfish found in the Maranon Jungle... far away from an ocean. With anthropomorphic face, wearing a mask on top of head; partially sculpted, partially painted; vivid red and cream colors similar to Chorrera sculptures from Ecuador. Note: Chavin Classic Ceramics in monotone Black/Grey or Brown tones are supposedly the oldest type of ceramics in Peru dating 1200-1000 BC, but this Chavin vessel dates 1500-1200 BC. Absolutely astonishing because of the bright colors. 9-1/2"L x 7"H.
