The 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round pays tribute to America’s native tribes and the majestic, once endangered buffalo. James Earle Fraser’s design for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel has inspired both images featured on this round.
Silver Buffalo Rounds are a tribute to two of the great American icons, Native Americans and the bison that freely roamed the prairie. And these Buffalo Rounds pay tribute to the original Buffalo Nickel or Indian Head Nickel minted from 1913 to 1938. The originals were not Silver coins, but rather copper-nickel five-cent pieces designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The precursor to the modern 1 ounce Silver Buffalo Rounds was commissioned in 1911 to replace the Liberty Head design created by Charles E. Barber, and from the start, there were delays along with the coin's dates being consistently worn away. Even so, the coins were minted for 25 years because congressional authorization was required to change designs.
