In 2006 the Royal Mint released a coin celebrating the 200th year of the birth of one of Britain's greatest engineers - Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859). Brunel was a key figure in the Industrial Revolution and he is remembered for many things, including railways, steamships, bridges and buildings. The £2 coin shows the roof of Paddington station, which was the main terminus of the Great Western Railway of which Isambard Kingdom Brunel was chief engineer. The reverse of the coin was designed by Robert Evans. In 2004 the Royal mint issued a coin playing homage to the locomotive. The first steam engine locomotive was built by mining engineer Richard Trevithick and travelled from Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales to Abercynon on its first journey in 1804, carrying 10 tons of iron, 5 wagons and 70 people on the 9 mile trip. The reverse design pays tribue to this first engine know as the 'Pennydarren' which started the growth of railway transport in the 19th Century.
