2004-W $5 American Gold Eagle 1/10 oz. Proof Coin
2004-W American Eagle one-tenth ounce proof coin issued by the United States Mint under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. This coin is struck in 22 karat gold, composed of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The total weight is 0.1091 troy ounces (3.393 grams), with a net gold content of 0.1000 troy ounces (3.110 grams). The proof finish showcases frosted design elements against a mirror-like background, achieved through specialized minting processes that involve multiple strikes and hand-polished dies. The obverse features the iconic full-length figure of Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She strides forward from the Capitol building with radiant sun rays behind her. The year 2004 appears to the right of Liberty's foot, and the mintmark "W", denoting the West Point Mint, is located beneath the date. The reverse, designed by sculptor Miley Busiek, presents a family of bald eagles symbolizing strength and tradition. A male eagle carries an olive branch as it soars above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD-5 DOLLARS. This lot includes the original U.S. Mint blue velvet presentation case with gold-tone fittings, an outer sleeve embossed with the Great Seal of the United States. Box: 4.25"L x 3.5"W x 1"H. Coin diameter: 16.5mm.
