2001: A Space Odyssey (MGM, 1968). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style C. Isaac Asimov revealed that director Stanley Kubrick sought an insurance policy from Lloyd's of London to protect himself against losses on the film in the event that extraterrestrial life visited earth before its release. Lloyd's declined. While the discovery of otherworldly intelligence never occurred, many moviegoers left the theater wondering if the film was itself evidence of something alien, or whether anything resembling intelligence was even involved. Rock Hudson famously walked out of the Los Angeles premiere, saying, "Will someone tell me what the hell this is about?" Of the three original one sheets issued, the style C (known as Centrifuge) is by far the rarest. Unlike the other two styles, this one sheet was only used for the Cinerama version, not the 70mm, so theaters unequipped for Cinerama did not order this poster. Robert T. McCall, one of the foremost illustrators of space-related images, did the artwork -- so detailed, the poster's often mistaken for photographic. Restoration has repaired a pinholes, fold line separations, tears and soe surface abrasions. Fine on Linen. .
