2001: A Space Odyssey David Bowman Keir Dullea Space Suit Set
Dave Bowman’s (Keir Dullea) Red suit set: Perhaps the most famous suit of all, since Bowman wears this for the last hour of the movie, over some of the most spectacular visuals in Cinema history. Bowman first puts the suit on, without the helmet to get into the pod to save Poole, and has to literally “explode” himself back into the ship when HAL refuses to let him back in, holding his breath until he can re-oxygenate the chamber. Then, with his helmet back on, we see him floating in the massive “Brain” of HAL, as he methodically lobotomizes HAL to keep him for doing any more harm. This triggers a pre-recorded film, originally intended for all the astronauts, letting them know that the sound that came from the Monolith on the moon was aimed at Jupiter, and that ITS “origin and purpose is still a total mystery”. Therefore Bowman, being the only surviving member of the mission but check this out… alone. This sets into motion the most stunning set of sequences ever created, starting the with infamous “Stargate” sequence and ending with Bowman and his pod in what looks like a “Louie 16th bedroom with illuminated floors. It is actually a “cage” in a “zoo-type” building where the Jupiter aliens are inspecting him (you can actually hear their gasps and laughter in the background) as Bowman wanders around in half-shock, still in his red spacesuit. In four quick cuts, he is out of his red suit, and has become an old man on his deathbed. He dies, becoming a “starchild” who travels back to Earth, representing the next stage of mankind. This red suit set comes vacuum-formed in a special box with orange communication center and oxygen pack, matching red helmet with “United Astronautics Agency – Discovery” emblems’ on either side on top, red gloves, and silver boots. The sides of the box represent the corridor that connects to the entrance of HAL’S main brain. The custom box has an overlay lid with color photos from the movie, and a “legend” (and interestingly the title of the movie “mis-spelled”, perhaps for legal reasons!). The main suit is approx. 9” x 6”.
