An ape mask from Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey. A group of apes surrounded the Monolith during the "Dawn of Man" sequence which opened the movie.

Created by renowned make-up and special effects technician Stuart Freeborn, the brown foam-latex prosthetic face features a pronounced brow ridge, eye holes, a detailed nose and a slightly opened mouth. The interior is labelled "Dan, ED6, C3", referring to credited ape performer Danny Grover, and the mask rests on a plastic face support.

The lot comes with a custom-made display mount and base featuring the production title on the front and Freeborn's autograph on the back in silver-coloured ink. The foam latex of the mask has stiffened over time, becoming brittle near the edges, and there is some light cracking present. Dimensions (displayed): 28 cm x 19 cm x 36 cm (11" x 7 1/2" x 14")
