<B>Pair of William E. Dodge Autograph Letters Signed.</B></I> <B>1).</B></I> Signed "<I>W.E. Dodge</B></I>", one page, 5.25" x 8", Phelps, Dodge & Co. stationery, New York, July 4, 1862. Written to a group of men who invited him to a lecture; Dodge gladly accepts their invitation in this short letter. <B>2).</B></I> Signed "<I>W.E. Dodge</B></I>", two pages, 5.25" x 8", Phelps, Dodge & Co. stationery, New York, December 15, 1857. The salutation only reads "<I>dear Sir</B></I>"; the letter reads in part: "<I>I suppose we will have a meeting of this bus. committee before the next regular meeting & talk over these matters. I shall try to be at the lecture this ev'g but have an engagement immediately afterwards…</B></I>". <BR><BR>William E. Dodge was not only one of the "Merchant Princes" of Wall Street, but was also a staunch abolitionist in the years leading up to the Civil War and afterwards. He was also known for his compassionate views on the rights of Native Americans. He was also a founding member of the Y.M.C.A., and a member of the National Temperance Society. The man was a model for temperance and compassion; this lot features two letters from this likeable character that are both perfect for display. Letter one is in very fine condition; light overall toning; usual folds are present; no edge damage. Letter two is in very fine condition; light overall toning; usual folds are present.
