2 WWII GERMAN FORESTRY/HUNTING EDGE WEAPONS.

1) FORESTRY. A forestry leaders cutlass measuring 18 1/2" overall. Flat blade with intricately etched forest scenes on both sides featuring stags, dogs & foxes, along with a well outfitted hunter. The ricasso is stamped “(knight’s head) WKC”. The spine of the blade is etched with foliate motifs and the words “G.ECKENHOFF NACHF. BERLIN”. Gilded brass hilt with downturned shell guard. The quillon & terminus of the knuckle bow are deer hooves and there are 3 acorns on each side of the 2-piece white grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard with original frog. CONDITION: blade has areas of original factory polish with some minor staining. Hilt retains areas of original gilding. Scabbard is quite solid with traces of original gilding on the throat & tip.
2) HUNTING. An extraordinarily fine functional bayonet measuring 15 3/8” overall. The single fullered blade is etched with a panel on one side that reads, “Weidmannsheil.”, which translates to “Good hunting”. The other side has a panel that reads, “Seinem Bruder”, which translates to “Your brother”. The ricasso is marked with a knight’s head. Darkened cross guard & bird head effigy pommel. 2-Piece staghorn grips secured by 3 pins on each side. The interesting scabbard has a leather body with darkened steel mounts. The front of the scabbard has a small pocket to house a 5 1/8” small stag handled knife. The original dark brown frog supports the entire scabbard with an interesting frog & support bar assembly. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing light gray finish. Hilt shows light wear to the darkened finishes. Scabbard & frog show light wear. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox.
