2 Volume Quarto Set of National Portrait Gallery
Two Volume Quarto Set of National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans: Including Orators, Statesmen, Naval and Military Heroes, Jurists, Authors, Etc., Etc., from Original Full Length Paintings by Alonzo Chappel with Biographical and Historical Narratives, by Evert A. Duyckinck. (New York: Johnson, Fry & Company, 1862), two volumes, 488 pages & 470 pages respectively, half leather with five raised spine bands as well as gilt spine lettering, 4to (8.5" x 11.25"), housed in a sturdy custom leather-backed slipcase with marbled paper boards. All edges gilt. Evert A. Duyckinck was a prolific editor of historical American reference works in the mid 19th century, and this National Portrait Gallery collection is among his best and most favored works. Contained herein are over a hundred striking steel engravings of various famous American historical personages plus brief biographical sketches by Duyckinck. The set presented here is in about very good condition, with some noticeable wear to the leather on both volumes, bumped corners, and mild rubbing to the boards of each as well. The binding is tight on each volume, with minimal off-setting of the engravings, confined mostly to the protective tissue adjacent to each illustration. The text shows scattered foxing in small areas, but is overall very clean. This set of National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans is a real feast for both the mind and the eye for any fan and/or collector of American history.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
