2 views published by John P. Soule, from negatives by Hazeltine or, more likely, J. J. Reilly. These images or variants were also published by Thomas Houseworth. Both on yellow mounts. No. 1280, "Big Tree, felled in Fresno Grove... " and 4981, "Cutting off sections of Big Tree.. " This last number is a misprint: it should be "1281." Also Fresno is misspelled as "Frezno," indicating the very first printing of this view. Gary Lowe kindly gave me a copy of his CD publication "The Big Tree Exhibits of 1870 - 1871 and the Roots of the Giant Sequoia Preservation Movement," Second Edition, 2004. It goes in great detail into all the aspects of the events pertaining to these views and their photographic publication, drawing on the article by Paul Hickman in STEREO WORLD 1994, with much original research using period documentation.
