These are 2 original hand-painted backgrounds from the Nickelodeon television show SpongeBob Squarepants. The story takes place under the deep blue sea in Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob resides. SpongeBob, who is a yellow, porous sponge, is your typical happy-go-lucky character, as he is always cheerful and enjoys making people laugh. Patrick Star, SpongeBob's neighbor who is a starfish, is your average children's show idiot, as he boasts knowing nothing and is often getting himself into ridiculous situations. Between the homes of these two lies the home of the miserable Squidward, a squid, who is known for being grouchy and playing tricks on SpongeBob and Patrick. Both SpongeBob and Squidward work at the Krusty Krab, a fast food business run by the greedy money-loving Mr. Krabs, a crab, the arch rival of the evil, possibly misunderstood, Plankton. Another neighbor, Sandy Cheeks, an athletic squirrel who normally wears an astronaut's space suit, was introduced in "Tea at the Treedome." She spends most of her time inventing and experimenting. The backgrounds here are from the Krusty Krab dining area. It appears there has been some sort of problem at the Krusty Krab, as one image shows a broken table and boards on the floor. The background establishes the location and the overall good mood of the scene. Typically, a background layout artist creates a drawing to establish the content of the scene, placement of characters, perspective and camera angle. Based on this drawing, the background artist creates a preliminary painting to confirm all of the scenes details, then the final production background which is used in the filming of the scene. When these backgrounds are individually photographed behind the progression of production cels, and projected at a rapid succession, the images in the foreground appear to move, creating an animated scene. The backgrounds are ready to be matted and framed. They include animator's notations, and 2003 Viacom copyright stamps at the lower edge. On one the bottom edge has been cut and retaped back on (a possible scene number change made at the studios).
