Staffordshire figural group of 2 russet painted spaniels, one seated on a barrel. Made in England, circa 1850. Spaniels look like the same dogs described as Welsh Springer Spaniels in Christies book on Staffordshire Figures, page 32 and they have the exact same kind of painted surface. (value of a single dog $1200-$3750.-).

Measurements: almost 9 inches high and 6 1/2inches accross.

Oval base with gold line. Possible gilt scrolls are worn away. A keg or barrel on a grassy patch supports one of the dogs, who is attached to it by a moulded and painted chain. The other dog sits lower down, on the base. The hand painting on the dogs is fabulous - notice the way the hairs have been depicted and the modelled coats. Wonderful eyes and other facial features. Gold collars around their necks.

There are no marks on the figure.

Condition is very good with the usual crazing and very minor paint loss, but no chips/cracks/damage/restoration.
