2 PIECES OF THE BANDAGE WRAPPED AROUND PRESIDENT

ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S HEAD WHEN HE DIED AT THE PETERSON HOUSE ACROSS FROM FORD’S THEATER. This historic lot includes 2 pieces of cloth each measuring approx. 1 3/4" x 1" & another piece of cloth identified as a sash also w/ staining. Each blood stained piece of bandage has 2 glue dots where it was, at one time, likely glued into a scrapbook. When found the 2 pieces of bandage & the piece of sash were in a sm. white envelope w/ the following written on the front, “Cloth fragments, supposedly Lincoln pillow or bandage and officer’s sash”. The smaller envelope was inside a larger, earlier envelope w/ the following earlier writing on the front, “A piece of the bandage that was on the head of Abraham Lincoln when he died.”. The envelopes & other Confederate & Union Civil War ephemera were recovered from a dumpster that a family was using to dispose of their deceased relative’s belongings. A Philadelphia coin dealer recovered the items &, in turn, sold them to our consignor. It is our opinion that the items are completely genuine & of extremely important historic significance. The piece of cloth termed an “officer’s sash”, is likely a piece of sash that was on the bed or window in the room where Lincoln died. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: several pages of research done on comparable Lincoln artifacts by the consignor. A book titled, “The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln”. A book titled, “The Terrible Tragedy at Washington”. A magazine published by the Smithsonian titled, “Assassination!”. An assembled work titled, “Curios and Relics, Household Textiles, Pillowcases, Lincoln Death Bed”. CONDITION: cloth fragments are stable. Envelopes have yellowed but remain solid.
