<B>Two Large Printed Invitations for President Garfield's Inaugural Reception.</B></I> These 9.75" x 6" cards are identical except that one is printed on white paper and the other is printed on light green paper. A wonderful example of Gilded Age graphics, the invitation carries portraits of James Garfield and Chester Arthur on either side of George Washington's likeness. The card announces that the new president's "Inaugural Reception & Promenade Concert" will be held at the National Museum on March 5, 1881. This fine brick edifice still exists as the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building. Both cards are imprinted with serial numbers on the verso.
