1) Starr-Grove Silver. Lewis District. Issued for 150 shares to M.E. Feyh on Dec. 6th, 1880. Signed by president William S Clark and secretary John Bathwell. Pinholes, folds, creases. William Smith Clark of Amherst, MA was also the president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College as well as president of Sapporo Agricultural College in Japan. When gold was discovered in Lewis Canyon people around Amherst, Clark’s hometown, rushed to purchase stock in the new company. The construction of a 12-mile narrow gauge railroad from Lewis Junction to the town of Lewis and the mines put a strain on the coffers. The line was completed in 1881. Accumulated debt, however, quickly caused the sale of the railroad right-of-way, and soon after the Starr-Grove mine went bankrupt, and operations ceased. 2) Nevada Silver Mining and Milling. Reese River Mining District. Early number 86 for 400 shares to Victor Vogel on May 1, 1880. Dateline Chicago. Signed by Jno. Benson and E. M. Howie. Orange under print that reads "Non Assessable". Large silver-colored company seal. Outside of folds in near perfect condition. This has a makings of a fraud perpetrated on Chicago investors. Additional notes included.
