About the Artist:

Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Appel forms the "Cobra" group in 1948 with Asger Jorn, Constant Corneille, and Christian Dotremont. The name of the group takes the initials of cities from which the members came. They wanted to keep a clear distance, both physically and mentally, from Paris and New York, both of which were then centers of postwar contemporary art. Appel and other members learnt from primitive art and children's books, making a point of being pure and free. Although their work is often labeled as "rough," the creative energy of the group continued to influence new generations. Apple painted the work "The Child of Hiroshima" with "a strong will to survive and a warning of the possibility that all living things may become extinct." Red in the painting represents blood and fire. The strong brushstrokes convey the intensity and desperation inside the artist.
