This is Catherine Theresa Romeyn Van Cortlandt, in1838. She was the daughter of Catherine Beck van Cortlandt, who was born in 1818, a descendant of Caleb Beck, who settled in New Hampshire in 1620. The mother married, in 1836, Pierre Van Cortlandt and lived in the historic Manor House (a major NY State Historic attraction in today's Croton-on-Hudson NY). She was active in charitable services during the Civil War, and later involved herself in aid to women prisoners at Sing Sing and later Auburn Prison. This is a pair of rich and appealing 1/6 plates. One shows the daughter in her cap, looking directly out with an appealing daguerreogenic glow. A melting portrait. In stippled arch-top mat, full case (spine is weak), with burgundy silk pad. Tarnish at left and bottom. Plus a close-up of her face, 1/6 plate in oval mat, itself over matted with a scalloped mat. Resealed, in 1/2 case [missing one rail] Very appealing pair, with historical significance.
