Two Great 1879 U. S. Grant Public Appearance Silk Souvenirs. In the years immediately following his terms as president, Grant made a triumphal tour of the U.S. and the world. He made appearances at dozens of functions put on by clubs and civic & political organizations as a speaker or welcome guest. At the time he made the appearances represented by the items in this lot in late 1879, he may have already been considering another run for the presidency- something he did do in 1880 (but failed to garner the nomination). The first item is a beautiful two-color printed menu for an appearance at the Society of California Pioneers at the Lick House (San Francisco) on October 24, 1879. It is on silk, 3.625" x 10.75", and in superb condition with perfect selvage top and bottom.

The second item is a program from the Public Schools of Philadelphia's welcome to Grant on December 20, 1879. It has a wonderful portrait of a uniformed Grant at the top in black. The text of this silk "programme" is in red. Condition is excellent with just a bit of dampstaining at the top and one vertical fold, excellent "displayability." 5.625" x 8.5".
