2-Piece Lot, 1st Published Pro-Work of Richard Corben and 1st Published Comic Strip:
Voice of Comicdom #12 and Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction Sept 1967 – HIGH GRADE

This is an auction for 2 of Richard Corben’s first published works. According to M. Steven Fox of Comixjoint, "Richard Corben has enjoyed a long and successful career as a comic illustrator, but his success did not come quickly or easily. He was nearly thirty years old before he was published in small-circulation publications (e.g. Voice of Comicdom #12) and eventually by underground comic publishers. Before that, Corben worked in construction with his father and for many years at Calvin Studios, a Kansas City commercial animation company. Voice of Comicdom #12 from June 1968 is historically significant because it published Corben's first comic strip “Monsters Rule.” As you might imagine, this item is very difficult to find (estimated print run of less than 1000 copies), and almost impossible to find in this condition. This is an uncirculated copy in VF+ - NM condition except for a hint of micro-dents and extremely light spotting on the edges. In addition, I am auctioning The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction from Sept 1967 featuring a color wraparound Corben cover, notable as it is his very first professionally published cover!

Voice of Comicdom #12 June 1968 (Uncirculated copy, VF+ to NM): Published/Edited by Rudy Franke. Voice of Comicdom was "Fandom's First Newspaper!" and featured a great mix of interviews, news items, and articles with a centerfold full of original comic strips. This "Special Walt Disney Issue" is historically significant because it is where Richard Corben's first comic strip work was published. Contents include: "Monsters Rule" 1 page strip by Rich Corben; "The World of Walt Disney" a detailed article/tribute to Walt Disney by future pro-artist and Warren Magazine editor Bill Dubay (takes up 3 of the 6 pages in this zine); "High Moon" comic strip by Dan McKee & Steve Kelez; "Universal Conquest" strip by ex-Timely artist Bob Cardozo; "Johnny Doom" strip by Rudy Franke; "Little Green Dinosaur" strip by future underground artist (and Rock & Roller) Johnny Chambers; "In the Lower Depths" strip by future underground comics pro George Metzger; "Arthane" strip by Mac McCaughan and Drew Sanders; "An Editorial" by Franke.

Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction Sept 1967 (Whole #196) VF: The Rich Corben color wraparound cover of this issue of the long running sci-fi magazine is notable - it is his very first professionally published cover! Credited as Richard V. Corben on the Contents page, there is also a reference to him on page 52 where Corben describes the technique he used to achieve the effect on the asteroid in the cover painting.
