Datelined ''Waters Ware House Hospital / Georgetown D.C.,'' 5 September 1862, Beal writes to his father: ''…you say that you are willing to give advise to your children when you think it will be heeded but in my case you know not what to say…one would suppose…that I did not heed your advise and so it is no use for you to give me any. Well…Since I have been in Georgetown my conduct has been without blame…thoes falts which I used to be so subject to I congratulate myself upon being perfectly free of now…in relation to my money for a rainy day, if this is not a rainy day I would like to see one…you seam…afraid that I shall come home and you will have to take care of me but…I have resolved not to give you any chance to complain of that…I have used my money as I needed it…I have not spend my money drinking nor gambling. neather have I spent it in houses of ill fame…in regard to the future. I have thought a good deal about it…since I have been in the hospital…I told you that when I got my discharg I should go to Baltimore and ship, and I think I shall now…I am very sorry to learn…that Burton has left the store. he has acted very foolish indeed…if he has got so contrary…and is bound to go to sea…you will find it will break him…'' Charles F. Beal mustered into Company F on 19 October 1861. He remained in service until he died of typhoid fever on 8 February 1863, at age 20. During his service, the 1st Maine Cavalry fought at at Middletown, Cedar Mountain and Second Bull Run. His brother Burton also served in the 1st Maine Cavalry. Ink letter measure 7.5'' x 9.75''.
