ALS from Charles F. Beal of the 1st Maine Cavalry, Company F, to his father. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Georgetown, DC / Sept 25th 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''…I am very sorry to learn that your health is so poor and as to my own all I can say is about the same…I am remaining in the Hospital and I don't know how long I shall have to stay. And now as to that good advice that you gave me in your last letter All I can say is I have done the best I could to keep off bad company and I think I have succeeded pretty well as I have not been out of the Hospital after 9 o clock but once since I have been in the city and then I went to the theatre over in Washington. Yes Sir! I think there has been a great change in me since I left home and I think I have grown older if not wiser…I have not much time to spend. I can not tell you when I shall get home. I shall have to abide by the direction of the doctor and they may send me home or they may send me back to the Reg. But I shall try to get my discharge and come home if there is a chance for me…Give my love to all of the folks and write as often as you can…'' Charles F. Beal mustered into Company F on 19 October 1861. He remained in service until he died of typhoid fever on 8 February 1863. During his service, Beal saw action at Middletown, Cedar Mountain and Second Bull Run. Letter measures 4'' x 6.25'' and runs 3pp. Fine condition.
