ALS from Charles F. Beal of the 1st Maine Cavalry, to his father. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil from ''Seminary Hospital / Georgetown D.C.;'' sans date, though content indicates the letter was written in September or October 1862. Excerpt: ''…I have been gaining quite fast and have been detaled in the Hospital…But as yet I do no night duty, as the doctor thinks I am not strong enough to stand it and I shall not draw any extra pay until I get detailed as a regular attendant. The doctor says he shall keep me on the sick list for a while yet but then he says he shall keep me here. We have a plenty to do now as we have got our hospital filled up with wounded soldiers from Richmond, they came in on the 4th…I am on the second floor wich has about 60 wounded in the ward…But I will come to the point that troubles me the most. I stand in need of some clothes and I cant get my pay untill they pay of the regament and it is allmighty hot and I have nothing but very thick woolen cloth…I want a pair of pants which will cost from 3 1/2 to 4 dollars and a coat and vest which will cost 7 or 8 dollars more and a pare of shoes 2 1/2 more as my boots have almost given out…I would not send for so much money if I could get along with out it…'' Charles F. Beal mustered into Company F on 19 October 1861 and remained in service until he died of typhoid fever on 8 February 1863. Beal saw action at Middletown, Cedar Mountain and Second Bull Run. Letter measures 7.75'' x 9.75'' and runs 3pp. Fine condition.
