ALS from Charles F. Beal of the 1st Maine Cavalry to his father. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Seminary Hospital / Georgetown D.C.,'' 24 August 1862, letter reads in part: ''…have been coaxing the Doctor to send me back to the Reg this two weeks but he won't let me go. And I told him that there was one of the two things about it was time that they should conclude to do one thing or the other about it. either send me to my Reg. or send me home…The 16th Maine Reg has arrived in Washington but I did not have a chance to see them as they crossed over for the land of Dixie all most as soon as they arrived and I expect the 17th in today and I shall send out over to Washington this afternoon for them. A part of Gen. McCullins army is over in the neighborhood of Alexandria and Washington is getting to be quite lively with the arrival of troops. there is from one to two Reg. arrive each day. And the war department have notified the owners of the surrounding country to harvest there crops so as to leave the fields open for the troops. but I will now draw to a close…'' Charles Beal mustered into Company F on 19 October 1861. He died of typhoid fever less than six months after writing this letter, on 8 February 1863. Before his death, Beal saw action at Middletown, Cedar Mountain and Second Bull Run. Letter measures 7.75'' x 12.25'' and runs 3pp. Fine condition.
