ALS from William Boyd of the 1st Maine Cavalry, Company F. Accompanied by cover. Written in ink and datelined, ''Head Quarters, First Maine Cavalry, December 26, 1864,'' letter reads in part: ''…Friend Annie…I received your good letter containing the picture…You say that it looks like you…allow me to say that you need not be afraid of your looking glass. I did not succeed in going home at Christmas…I expect to go soon. But not to be married…that happiness will not be mine unless I form a very hasty engagement…I should be obliged to call in the help of some friend to make the selection for me. Perhaps I shall call on you to do it…What say you?…The description of yourself suits me well…In return I will tell you some thing of myself. I am 30 years old, 6 feet tall and weigh 190. You can judge of my size. I have Blue Eyes & Brown hair. As for beauty, I never had any. I am fond of fun, and enjoy good society. Do not have the blues very often. I love my friends, and pity my enemies…Pray, how does the description suit, Miss Annie? I think I shall be old enough to marry next next year or as soon as the War is over…I presume your Father will join us in the field again…Your friend, W.L .Boyd. So Good Night 'Annie'…'' William Boyd was commissioned into Company F as a Second Lieutenant on 5 October 1861. He was promoted to Captain and Adjutant before mustering out on 1 August 1865. The 1st Maine Cavalry saw service at the battles of Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, Appomattox Court House and many others. The regiment lost more soldiers killed in action than any Cavalry regiment in the Union Army. Letter measures approximately 8'' x 10'' and runs 3pp. Near fine condition.
