ALS from Erastus Pollett of the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery. Written in ink and datelined ''June the 16th 1864, Camped at Fort Williams, Baton Rouge Louisiana,'' letter reads in part: ''…I have not bin very well for several days I have had the touch of the yaller ganders but not very bad…it has bin a raining here for the last 14 days untill the last 2 days it hasent rained any and it is a geting a warm and nice again only it is a little mudy under foot yet. I have not got any letter from home sinse the 1st day of June I got one from you on the 26th of May and the last one that I got from father was the 30th April. Louisa rote a few lines in the last letter that I got I have not got any letter…from Rufus for a long time I have not got but one letter from Leusindas folks yet I have riten several times to I have not got any letter from uncle Macks folks yet although I have riten to them several times if I cant get any letters I am going to quit riteing only at home and I have riten tolerabel often home. I rite as often as onse a week very often 9 a week so no more at present. rite soon as you get these lines and you must excuse me from all mistakes for I am in a very good fix for riteing this evening…'' The 1st Indiana was engaged at Baton Rouge, Des Allemands and Fort Bisland and participated in the Siege of Port Hudson. Erastus Pollett mustered in on 10 October 1863. His date of discharge is unknown. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3pp. Some toning and small tear at bottom of last page, otherwise near fine.
