Thomas Paine. The Trial of Thomas Paine, for Certain False, Wicked, Scandalous and Seditious Libels Inserted in the Second Part of the Rights of Man Philadelphia: John Parker, 1793.

First edition. Octavo. 28 pages.

Blue leather back over blue cloth boards, lettered in gilt. Custom slipcase.

Born in England, Thomas Paine (1737-1809) became a major figure in the American Revolution upon publication of the pamphlet Common Sense in 1776. After returning to Europe, he completed the anti-monarchist, pro-revolutionary book The Rights of Man in early 1791, the publication of which resulted in his being put on trial by "Mad" King George III. Though Paine didn't attend the trial, he was found "guilty of the charges alleged against him" (the pamphlet ends with this verdict). These pages are in fair condition, with stains, soiling, and slightly tattered edges; the remains of a twine binding are still present at the spine. The slipcase is fine with minor wear.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
