Featured for sale in this lot is a 1st Edition of, “Chief of Scouts - Piloting Emigrants Across the Plains of 50 Years Ago” written by Capt. W.F. Drannan and published by Rhodes & McClure Publishing Company in 1910. The book is "Copiously illustrated" by E. Bert Smith. The book is a sequel to Drannan's book, "Thirty-One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains". This is an autobiography of a Scout Captain William F. Drannan in which he has tried to portray that part of his earlier life which was spent in piloting emigrant and government trains across the Western Plains. This narrative gives you a fresh look at early pioneer travels across the west and the smarts that men, like Mr. Drannan, acquired when dealing with those hostile and tough new lands. According to two books that Drannan wrote he was a contemporary and brother-in-arms of such icons American icons as Kit Carson, Jim Bridger and General George Crook. The adventures he described having with these men were mostly of the heroic and hair-raising variety. The books helped satisfy the American public’s seemingly insatiable appetite for stories about a frontier that had been there not that long ago but wasn’t there any more at the turn of the century. Young boys were especially keen on the books, as they described a life full of adventure that was the fundamental stuff of their dreams. The condition of this book is good with some wear to the dust cover along with some wear to the outside cover and shows some browning to the pages but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this 7 3/4" x 5 3/8". The collective weight of this book is 1lb.
