John Paul Jones, Scottish-born American naval hero is featured in this 1859 bookplate steel engraving, unsigned, 8 ½ x 11 ¾ overall, image 3½ x 4½. Engraved by J.B. Longacre from a portrait by C.W. Peale. Published by J.O. Wright & Co., N.Y. Facsimile signature below image. Born in Scotland, John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was a merchant captain before joining the U.S. Navy during the American Revolution. In February 1778, his vessel Ranger exchanged salutes with a French warship, the first official recognition of the U.S. flag by a foreign power. In September, 1779, he made his famous reply, "I have not yet begun to fight" to a British demand for surrender, & then went on to win the naval duel. After the Revolution, he served as a Rear Admiral in the Russian navy of Catherine the Great. Buried in France at a forgotten location, Jones was recovered & brought back to America with a warship escort. He now rests in a crypt in the chapel of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  Â
