19th century small brass cannon with antique carriage, tube measures approximately 25" from cascabel to muzzle; the muzzle narrows to 4" with 1-1/2" bore, no markings but well cast and antique. The tube is secured to the hardwood carriage by large brass plates showing 8 iron screws. The plates measure 10-1/2" and the sides of the carriage are 2-1/2" thick. The wood wheels show forged iron cotter pins and there are forged ironrings on each side of carriage. This exact cannon is featured in the Chicago Sunday Tribune, February 2, 1958, in an article about a collection being sold at Shore-Lauter Galleries for unclaimed storage charges,where the collection had been left since 1941. The collection was gathered by General Charles S. Bentley, a Brigadier in the 2nd Iowa Brigade, Grand Army of the Republic, Civil War, who was a grain merchant and moved to Chicago in 1885. Bentley sold the collection in 1924 to Mrs. Denise Herendeen, who was a lover of Civil War relics, who put them into storage. There was a stove in this collection that was reported to have
