19th century powder horn showing original carved decoration and measuring approximately 12” across the curve and 3 ½” across the oval plus by 2 ½” wide. The original wood plug shows a break and loss on one edge and is approximately 2”x ¼”. Thethin metal staple is retained for hanging strap and a carved old plug is also retained. The horn shows a two massed sailing ship with full rigging and American Eagle with liberty and shield. The initials “I.M.” and other absolutely genuine tothe period carved naïve motifs. The condition is good overall and we would date this horn between the Mexican-American war and the Civil War. The William A. Gary collection consigned by his estate. Est.: $600-$1200
