19th century dagger with chiseled steel hilt and gold Damascus decoration made at the Toledo Armory under the direction of "Esubio Zoloaga" and scabbard marked "Alvarez" who was the premier metal smith at the armory.The dagger measures 10-1/2" from tip to end with approx 6-3/4" blade. The hilt is finely chiseled in steel and with pronounced faces reminiscent of the Munich Royal workshop styled after the period of the early 17th century in form. The blade is finely etched in gold Damascus showing archaic motif. The condition is fine to excellent and the dagger is stunning. Zoloaga worked with Le Page in France and studied in manymuseums, inspecting collections of Munich Royal workshop arms and metal work. Also he recreated the ancient Arabic form of damascened gold decorations. He displayed his craftsmanship at exhibitions in the 19thcentury where this work won acclaim and many awards. He opened the Toledo Armory in Spain and re-created the superb metal and gold decoration of the renaissance era. The early Toledo Armory workmanship is superb and is
