19th-century Sioux Beaded Buffalo Hide Drop
The lot features an Indian tanned buffalo hide drop with fantastic beadwork dating to the 19th-century from the Sioux of the Northern Plains. The piece exhibits Indian tanned Buffalo / Bison hide with sinew sewing and is covered in amazing geometric beadwork which is also sinew sewn. The beadwork shows colors of chalk white, cobalt, greasy butterscotch yellow, red white heart, greasy Cheyenne pink, greasy light blue, and medium blue. The piece likely started its life as a war shirt strip and later was used as a drop for a war club, lance or belt with the attachment holes at the top. Likely dates to circa 1860-1880's. The edge has a zig-zag scalloped edge and bottom has a curve. Measures overall when laid flat 19.5--inches long by 2 5/8-inches wide. Has nice patina.
