Alfred Edward Chalon (1780-1860) Switzerland. The artist was born in Geneva and active with regard to his artistic career in the United Kingdom. Chalon was a student at the Royal Academy and became a member of the R.A. in 1812. Chalon with his artist brother co-founded The Sketching Society. The artist is well-noted for his portraits of the aristocratic and important members of English society including his portrait of the young Queen Victoria, who appointed Chalon as watercolorist to the queen. The artist created paintings and drawings of historical subject matter and themes from mythology.
The scene depicted in the drawing may be from a story in Greek literature that concerns the goddess Artemis.
