This rug was woven by Turkic-speaking Muslims inhabiting Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan and northern Iran. The design indicates it was probably woven near an area along either side of the border between Turkestan and northeastern Iran, and areas around Heart in Afghanistan.
Rug weaving for the western market became a significant part of the economy starting in the late nineteenth century. These weavings are in shades of red or reddish brown with highlights of ivory, rust and navy colors. The usual design is a repeated octagon.
The pile of this rug is wool and the foundation (warp and weft) is cotton.
This is an old carpet which shows normal wear.
