19th-century North African Dagger & Sheath
The lot features a North African dagger dating to the 19th-century, used in Morocco and Algiers. Demonstrative of the interconnection of the Mediterranean, these were used by Barbary pirates and based on the Corsican vendetta daggers. This example shows a forged blade with etched engravings, squared off ricasso, one piece octagonal tapering wood handle inlaid with a gold or brass wire and held into place with a wrapping of metal wire and brass / gold wire. This has a wood sheath wrapped in leather with a pressed design. The Barbary states were part of the Ottoman Empire at the time. These knives are also referred to as Algerian daggers, Bou Saadi or Khodmi daggers. Measures overall 11 5/8-inches long.
