Here is an endearing Staffordshire figurine from the first
half of the 19th c. The vivid colors used and the contrasting
patterns of his clothing make this contemplative gentleman
someone you might like to meet. He might be a
schoolmaster, or perhaps someone studying theology. His light brown beard is
shaped like a ruff.
The figurine is in excellent condition,
despite the lose of one short leg on his stand-alone
backpack. The missing leg really does not impact on the
beauty of the
piece.
The little man is 5" tall. He stands on a small
platform, approx. 2" square. It is possible that his two
containers, the one to his side, and the backpack on his back
were once used to hold matches.
