WAIT UNTIL YOU'VE SEEN THIS!! 19th c. ladies of wealth and
position never went anywhere without their very own
footstool, of course. Tea with Aunt Abigail required that
everything about one's etiquette and appearance be
absolutely perfect.
This ingenious device, designed to
elevate the foot just enough to discreetly show off a
well-turned ankle was designed to be compact and easily
carried. In closed position, the footstool appears to be a
wood box, not unlike a glove box. One small brass knob
pulls out a drawer the length of the box itself. In this
drawer, the silk carrying bag (no longer extant) would be
kept during the visit. On the underside are two legs on
hinges which fold down to act as short legs for the
footstool. A hidden panel is pulled down by a small brass
knob and acts to keep the legs from collapsing.
When the
maid is called to remove the tea plates and the visit is over,
the footstool is tucked back into its little silk pouch and
accompanies its mistress back home in her carriage.
Another triumphant day of breeding and decorum to add to
her long list of accomplishments!
What would you do with this most unusual piece, you ask?! Use it to display a piece of art, or perhaps part of your special collection, be it a small piece of sculpture or a beautiful piece of porcelain. You will find something special for this very beautiful ankle stool!
