OUTSTANDING 19th c. ENGLISH ironstone Batty's Nabob Pickles jar with a
superb transfer label, showing Anglo Indian Batty Nabob, in full
regalia, spearing a pickel with a fork. The transfer is excellent -
very detailed. Batty has a real twinkle in his eye as he prepares
to pop the pickle into his mouth.
In addition to the
remarkable, central image of Batty, there is text on the right -
"WITH BETTS CAPSULE", and on the left: 'ONLY GENUINE WHEN
SECURED". The text at the very bottom of the jar reads: Batty's
Nabob Pickels.
The transfer text on the very bottom of the
jar is quite fascinating. It reads in a 1.25" diam. circle: LONDON
M. ISSACS & SONS IMPROVED GRANITEWARE. In the center of the
circle is a very curious image of an arm, perhaps in armor
holding a sort of tool. Underneath the picture are the words
TRADE MARK.
CONDITION: The jar is in fine condition, with
3 very small flakes off on the inside of the mouth. The text at
the very bottom of the image appears to be smeared, although
the text is still legible. It only adds to the charm!
It is astounding to find an ironstone
advertising jar from that era with such a complex, and delightful
image, and in such wonderful condition.
Whether your passion is advertising, ironstone,
transferware, or foods, you must not miss this chance to own a
Batty's Nabob Pickles of your own!!
