19th Qing Dynasty Chinese Hudiedao Butterfly Sword
Presented in this lot is a Rare 19th Century Qing Dynasty Chinese Hudiedao Butterfly Sword, circa mid to late 1800s. Never adopted or issued by the Imperial military, this type of sword gained its prominence in the martial arts. Featuring an ornately handcarved Rosewood grip, the hudiedao has a heavy steel "D" guard, very similar to a European cutlass. The blade is wider and heavier, and exhibits a sturdy hatchet point. While still capable of stabbing through heavy clothing or leather, these knives are designed with cutting and hacking in mind. This hudiedao is more reminiscent of the blades favored by modern Wing Chun (a concept-based martial art, a form of Southern Chinese kung fu, and a close-quarters system of self-defense) students. This hudiedao is in good condition, dark oxidation exhibited throughout. Leather scabbard does not appear to be for this sword, seam is split. Sword measures 17.75"L x 5.5"W; blade is 2.25"W at the guard. Total weight 1lb, 6oz.
