Lovely Pair of statues of a young girl and a young boy wearing rural clothes, each one is carrying a basket. Size is 14.5" Tall - (37 cm.).
Each figure underside is marked with an impressed U&C and an impressed number . This is the mark of J. Uffrecht & Co., used on siderolith and earthenware circa 1895, as identified in Robert Röntgen?s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain, 1710 to the Present, revised ed., (Atglen, PA: Schiffer. 1997), at page 335. Uffrecht was a manufacturer of household earthenware pieces from 1855 until 1924 (when it merged with C. & E. Carstens, to become Carstens-Uffrecht).
Although molded siderolith pieces such as this are sometimes confused with majolica, siderolith is an earthenware composed of (usually terre cotta) colored clay with an enameled (or sometimes varnished) coating -- rather than the light colored clays and tin-oxide glazes that are typical of continental majolica. Condition: Excellent, no chips or repairs.
