19th Century Minniwaukan Tomahawk, with Certificate of Provenance and Authenticity from expert John Baldwin, dated Jan. 15, 2001. In his observation, Mr. Baldwin states, ''The iron head with the stamped star and moon design into the blade is called the Minniwaukan style. This term originally comes from a 1905 book on pipes by George A. West of the Milwaukee Public Museum. West felt that these stamped heads were made in the area west of Milwaukee by one blacksmith about 1880. Several examples with this design with a triangular blade and several examples with the same exact spontoon head shape pictured here are pictured in my book on pipe axes.'' Head is approx. 9-1/2'' long, shaft is 18-1/2'' long, with finger knurled grip at base, rawhide thongs with blue and turquoise glass beads, as well as additional brass beads to either side. Shaft is hollow for use as a pipe; upper third with neatly carved arrow motifs. Condition is excellent with darkening to shaft at lowe!
r two-thirds, minor toning to high carbon steel head, and light chips to glass beads. Est.: $3,000-$4,500.
