19th Century Metis-Cree Beaded Hide Scout Jacket
The lot features a fantastic 1800s Buffalo Indian hide beaded scout jacket from the Metis-Cree Indians. The piece shows a thick Indian tanned Great American Buffalo Bison hide with long thick fringes running from the chest around the shoulders and across the back. The shoulders, pockets, arm cuffs, and across the shoulders / back with 1800s Indian beads in colors of greasy blue, Cheyenne pink, greasy green, greasy dark / medium green, semi-transparent red, semi-transparent green, orange, red white heart, cobalt and greasy blue. The jacket shows a classic Metis-Cree scout jacket pattern in a similar pattern as the circa 1875 Northern Cree Jacket sold in April 2023, for $5,525 and the circa 1885, Metis-Cree scout jacket sold by Showtime in 2017 for $5,185 (both w/ bp). The jacket shows Indian Buffalo hide panels that run down the center with scalloped, fancy cut edge, running down both sides with matching collar (found almost exclusively on Metis-Cree scout jackets), as well as on the pockets and cuffs. The front shows traded Plains silver concho / concha buttons tied on with thick Buffalo hide. The jacket is both sinew and trade thread sewn and is of a large men's size. Well preserved with some bead loss but overall displays beautifully. Provenance: From the Robert Dickens aka "Little Blue Hand" collection from Chicago, Illinois and Livingston, Montana. Measures overall 32"L x 19"W from shoulder seam to shoulder seam and 61"W from cuff to cuff.*
