Hand-carved wooden figure representing Johannes Gutenberg (German, c. 1394-1468), noted inventor of the movable-type printing press. This 19th-century sculpture originates from Germany and is executed in carved wood with polychrome paint and gilded accents. The figure is depicted standing upright with one leg slightly forward, dressed in a long, fur-trimmed robe with vertical folds and a tri-colored cap. In his left hand he holds a closed book with visible banding on the spine, and in his right, three gilded alphabet blocks displaying the letters A, B, and C, symbolizing the transmission of literacy and print culture. Carving emphasizes details of the facial features, beard, and draped garment. The figure stands on a shaped octagonal base showing signs of wear consistent with age. Underside of the base features a stamp with German text and a tag marked "Handwerkliche Arbeiten + HS," indicating association with a traditional German craft guild or artisanal workshop. The surface shows intentional aging and patina throughout, enhancing its historical character.
