This is a brass Palaska (cartridge belt) box. It measures 4 in. X 5 in. X 1.5 in. C.19th century. The box has a brass loop on the back for belt mounting. This box would have handled either paper cartridges or early brass cartridges. Either way, one would not be far from your ammunition. A necessity for the hunter as would be his fire starter. Solid brass, in very good condition. The top finial looks to have been remounted by good craftsmanship in its useful period. The top lid still snaps closed. Likely made in India. The Palaska was also used throughout the Ottoman Empire.
